HOLISTIC- EVOLUTION OF NATIONAL CINEMA
PAST SCENARIO
As we go all way back to 1913, a filmmaker, Dadasaheb Phalke, often
regarded as ‘Father of Indian Cinema’, his film “Raja Harishchandra” was
India’s first feature silent film.
As technology advanced, sound helped to make movies more engaging. In
1931, Alam Ara became the first ‘talkie’.
THE GOLDEN ERA (1950s)
The inclusion of colors was one of the key reason of the progress of cinema.
1950s saw a little bit of everything: romance, drama, realism, comedy and
musicals. The most remarkable film of this era is Rakesh Sippy’s ‘Sholay’.
Social issues such as farmer sufferings, untouchability came to limelight
through movies such as Mother India (1957), Do Bhiga Zameen (1953), etc.
The craze of cinema among the people increased incredibly by 1950s.
Everyone used to eagerly wait for the weekends to come to watch the
movie!
THE ERA OF NOSTALGIA (1990s)
The 90s was the period of romance and music. Art films also strived after
the release of Satya (1998).
This era gave us many blockbusters such as Baghban, Kabhi khushi Kabhi
Gham, Hum saath saath Hai, DDLJ, etc, which emphasized on promoting
family unity, good morals and Indian culture.
How can we forget the music that gets the audience on their feet!
But still there were some concepts like women empowerment, reality based
events, etc, which were left untouched. The growth is now needed in the
content quality of the movie. The movies often lack female autonomy and
independence. Dreamy scenes and Melo drama makes the movie unrealistic.
An attempt towards modernization was made through producing movies
like Student of the Year etc. But they ended up promoting a western and an
imaginary life.
So there are many areas where the progress was needed which was
undertaken by present era.
PRESENT SCENARIO
A major transformation took place after few years. The movies releasing in
the present era are cost-efficient, realistic in nature, helped in development
of awareness and empathy.
Originality came into emergence through the movies like Airlift Kashmir
Files, Kerala Story, Mrs. Chatterjee v/s Norway, Manjhi, etc., which
acknowledged people with the current happenings or what had happened
in the past few years.
OTT platforms has now given us the facility to watch the movies of our
choice and at our convenient place.
Picture quality has been enhanced to a great extent and the viewers can
even enjoy the 3D experience of movie in theatres!
Movies like Dangal, MaryKom, Manikarnika, etc., portrayed women
empowerment. Movies based on the biographies emerged like MS Dhoni:
The Untold Story, Neerja, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, The legend of Bhagat
Singh, etc.
Historical movies became the area of interest for many directors. Movies
like Padmavat, Tanhaji, Kesari, etc were released.
However, there are some flaws like use of abusive language in movies, trend
of remake songs and lyrics of some songs are just meaningless, our culture,
social and moral values are shown out dated. Hence, we need to pay
attention on these flaws to continue the series of evolution.
FUTURE SCENARIO
The rapid growth in the Indian Cinema promises a good future in the
entertainment industry.
The rise of budding filmmakers working on low budget films and still creating
a masterpiece, with the help of independent producers who are investing in
really great projects, is a good step towards quality content which are a big
focus these days.
Fresh faces, nowadays get great opportunities to work, thanks to exponential
growth of OTT platforms where they can showcase their creativity and acting
skills.
The well-nuanced characters played by Manoj Bajpayee, Neena Gupta,
Ayushmann Khurana, Rani Mukherji, Rajkumar Rao, etc in various movies
and series show a positive growth in the Indian Cinema.
Moreover, people these days, not only want the masala storyline of
commercial films but also screenplay, depth of the characters, good songs to
croon to, acting which touches the hearts of the audience to make them
rewatch.
The future of our entertainment industry looks bright, but of course it shall
have its fair share of good and bad films.
